Miles Donahue: Which of your philosophical commitments do you hold most tenuously, do you hold with the most uncertainty?
David Bentley Hart: The benevolence of being. I have lots of arguments against metaphysical naturalism, on logical grounds, but on the moral picture of the Absolute or of God, the problem of evil for me is sufficiently grave and intractable that my trust in the goodness of God in a way that's comprehensible to me is not something that I can say. I don't know if it's my most tenuous commitment, but it's certainly the thing for which I have the most tenuous arguments.
